Robert Burkert

1930 - 2019 Born in Racine, Wisconsin
Award-winning artist Robert Burkert's early interest in art began close to home with scholarship classes at the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Racine. His early lithographs were created on an old press in a studio at the museum. His early art teachers were Sylvester and Cherry B. Jerry at the Wustum, and Helen Sawyer at Racine's Washington Park High School. As a teenager, Burkert was also interested in comic art, and drew a teen-oriented comic strip for the Chicago Tribune.

As a teen, he also worked as a "ghost" artist on a number of projects for Western Publishing. These influences and interests later led him to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied drawing, painting and printmaking. His art professors included Dean Meeker, Alfred Sessler, John Wilde, Don Anderson, James Watrous and Santos Zingale. While a student there, Burkert won recognition in regional competitive shows. He received his B.S. degree in drawing, painting and printmaking from UW-Madison in 1952 and his M.S. degree in painting and printmaking in 1955.

Elton Bennett (June 2, 1910 - January 30, 1974) was a 20th-century American artist living and working in the Northwest.

Born in 1910 in Cosmopolis, Washington, Bennett grew up and worked on the Washington coast, attended art school at the age of 36 and by 1956 became a full-time artist making serigraphs or silk screen prints. He continued working until his death with his wife in 1974 in a commercial plane crash.

Bennett chose the silkscreen medium because of his belief that original art should be accessible to everyone. Prints allowed him to produce many original silkscreens at relatively affordable prices. Despite the fact that his prints now sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars, according to his daughter during his lifetime he never sold one for more than $15. Using silkscreens allowed him to vary the work by changing the colors and recombining or reusing elements to the point where a work was never finished and continually evolving - he could always tinker with it and improve it more. For example, a catalog of his artwork might include multiple images of a scene such as "Around the Cape" using different color pallets, such as blues, gold, greens, etc. or the same middle-background sailing ship may appear in multiple scenes such as "Down to the Sea", "Return to the River", and "Forest of Spars".

The coast of the Pacific Northwest, the sea, ships, and landscapes that Bennett grew up with and worked among were his primary subjects. People are relatively rare, and almost never the main subject, appearing as silhouettes on shore or on a ship. Often the rain and weather of the north pacific coast are nearly as prominent as the main subject. These elements often contribute to a peaceful loneliness in the images.

Will Rafuse was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. After spending many years living on the Prairies he moved to Vancouver, BC in 1986. He received a diploma in Graphic Arts and Illustration from Capilano College in North Vancouver and continued his education at Vancouver Community College receiving a diploma in Computer Graphics and Multimedia. Since 2006 Will lives and paints in Montreal, Quebec.

Intrigued by the works of Modigliani, Gauguin and Balthus, Will works mostly in oils and is known for his bright colors and the slightly animated twist of subjects he paints. His art is in the collection of corporations and individuals around the world.

Original engravings were done by H. Fletcher in 1730 from the "Twelve Months of Flowers" collection of Henry Furber. The engravings show flowers that bloom in each of the twelve months in a bouquet, with flower names listed at the bottom of the engraving. April, May and October are the months included in this trio.

Each framed engraving is 17" x 21".

Ensaburo (After Kunishige) by Michael Knigin, American (1942 - 2011)

Michael Knigin had a prolific career. Between 1978 and 1982, in a series of paintings and prints inspired by the works of Japanese woodblock print artists such as Hiroshige, Hokusai, Utamaro, Harunobu, Buncho, Kunimasa, Kambara and Yoshitaki, Michael Knigin created a bridge that has spanned both time and space.

They are called "The Japanese Suite," and consist of approximately 50 paintings and 100 hand-drawn original lithographs, all with Ukiyo-e landscapes and figures in the foreground, placed against black and white photographic backdrops of the Manhattan skyline and other urban scenes.

The 50 paintings in the series were created by an innovative process, in which Michael's photographs of the city skyline were developed directly onto a special photographic canvas called Luminos. Michael then added interpretations of Japanese images that he thought to be extraordinary to the foreground by hand with acrylic and enamel paint. He did note however that, although his line drawings are quite true to the original Japanese woodblock prints, he took creative liberties with color and a myriad of textures. The result is both unexpected and compelling.
